Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
