The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
The Australian chief selector the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Perth.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not just the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.
"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.
Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.
He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.
All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
